Groundwater
There are extensive groundwater areas in the municipality of Siilinjärvi. Most of the groundwater resources are located in the longest esker section in Finland, which runs through the municipality. The Jälänniemi, Harjamäki-Kasurila and Kärängänmäki aquifers, which are important for water supply, have been formed in this esker section. The Harjamäki-Kasurila aquifer is extended in the western part of the municipality by the Harjamäki-Käärmelahti aquifer. There is also the Autioranta aquifer in the south-western part of the municipality.
There are groundwater wells in Jälänniemi, Harjamäki-Kasurila area, Kärängänmäki and Autioranta, which supply not only domestic water in the municipality of Siilinjärvi, but also water to neighbouring municipalities. In the Harjamäki-Käärmelahti aquifer there is a water intake of Kuopion Vesi Oy.
Groundwater basins and their status can be found on the vesi.fi map service.
The protection plans for Siilinjärvi groundwater areas have been updated in the project to update the protection plans in 2023-2024. The Siilinjärvi Municipal Council has approved the updated groundwater area protection plans on 26 May 2025. The plans present the hydrogeological characteristics of the groundwater areas, risk factors that endanger groundwater and recommendations for measures.
A groundwater protection plan is a report and guidance document that is applied in land use planning and regulatory control. The protection plan can also be used in the processing of permit applications and notifications. The protection plan allows operators in the groundwater basin to proactively develop their activities in a way that minimises the risk to groundwater quality and quantity. Protection plans provide a comprehensive basis for identifying and managing risks.
The groundwater protection plans are available only in Finnish and in .pdf form.
