Support for learning
The aim of support for learning is to help and support pupils so that they have equal opportunities to complete their compulsory education in accordance with the conditions of their peers.
The Basic Education Act and the curriculum confirm the right of pupils to early, systematic and preventive support. The support system is made up of group-specific support and pupil-specific support. Group-specific support is the primary way to support a student. Group-support includes, for example, special education teacher support for a general education group and concurrent teaching.
Part-time special education is provided in all basic education schools. The support provided varies according to the nature and extent of the learning disability. In addition to part-time special education, flexible teaching arrangements and small class sizes are also available.
Classroom-based special education is provided in special classes at Hamula, Siilinlahti, Vuorela and Ahmo schools. Special classes provide school places for pupils with extensive learning difficulties, which may be caused by language difficulties, neurological disabilities, developmental delays or intellectual disabilities.
