Siilinjärvi city centre development project launched
24.9.2024
The centre of Siilinjärvi will be developed into a versatile, urban service, business and residential centre. The aim of the development project is to improve the vitality of the town centre, develop an attractive business environment and safeguard the quality of the living environment.
The city centre from the past to the present
The centre of Siilinjärvi has changed over the decades. Until the 1970s, the centre was located around the railway station, but in the 1970s and 1980s it moved to Kasurilantie. After the construction of the motorway in the 1990s, the centre was moved to its current location.
The plans drawn up in the 1990s are partly outdated and no longer allow for the development of the central district. The Downtown Development Plan has been set as a target in the 2021 Zoning Plan, and the Kirk Village Master Plan adopted in 2016 includes development targets for transport and parking areas.
In the 2010s, the projects that have been planned have been based on adequate parking solutions, such as two-level parking around the S-market and the bus station. Future developments will require significant investments in parking facilities.
Areas for development and objectives
In particular, the area around the current market square is targeted for development, but the whole city centre between the motorway and the railway station is also under consideration. The aim is to create a vibrant and welcoming town centre that serves both residents and businesses. To develop a more compact downtown area while maintaining functionality and improving residential amenities. To improve mobility and accessibility by all modes of transport. In addition, structuring parking arrangements and examining efficiencies.
Resident and entrepreneur survey on the development of the city centre
To inform the development, a survey of residents and entrepreneurs was carried out in September 2024, which received 478 responses. Special thanks to the respondents! The results of the survey will be analysed and used in the preparation of a development plan, which will start as a thesis. Below is a short summary of the responses to the survey.
