Resource wisdom and climate action
Siilinjärvi has been working towards climate and resource wisdom since 2018. The Siilinjärvi Resource Wisdom Programme (available only in Finnish) was adopted in 2020 and the Climate Programme (available only in Finnish) in 2021. The programmes form the basis for the municipality’s resource and climate work. The aim is that the municipality of Siilinjärvi will be strongly involved in the climate work of municipalities, as well as contributing to and supporting the regional climate work and the carbon neutrality goal of North Savo. In terms of emissions, the aim is that the municipality of Siilinjärvi will reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by around 60% by 2035 compared to 2005 levels.
The main themes of the resource wisdom and climate programmes are related to
- energy production and consumption,
- mobility and urban structure,
- circular economy, consumption and material flows,
- agriculture and food consumption,
- forests as carbon sinks and sources of wealth, and
- water use and natural waters.
The climate programme is currently being updated by the SISU project. The update will combine the programmes and will be complemented by a Climate Change Adaptation and Preparedness Plan.
The municipality of Siilinjärvi joined the FISU network at the end of 2024 and at the same time committed to the network’s emission targets. As a result, the municipality’s greenhouse gas reduction targets will be updated. The updated climate programme will also serve as Siilinjärvi’s roadmap to the FISU network targets.
