enrolment times by school (available in Finnish)
Letters will be sent by email in week 4. If you have not received a school enrolment letter by email, you can print the form here (available in Finnish).
Children born in 2019 or deferred in the previous year will start basic education in autumn 2026. The guardian registers his/her child in the school (primary school) in the district where his/her home is located at the beginning of the 2026 autumn term.
The municipality assigns the pupil a local school and the school place is determined on the basis of the pupil’s official home address and the school attendance areas approved by the Education Board. The pupil’s official home address is the address given in the population register.
The Haaparinne residential area in South Siilinjärvi is part of the Vuorela school catchment area. The change of school attendance area came into force on 1 August 2021 and has the effect that families in the Haaparinne residential area no longer have the option to choose between Toivala and Vuorela schools for their children starting primary school. However, the change of school attendance area does not affect families who already have a child/children in Toivala school. For these families, the choice will be maintained to allow siblings to attend the same school.
Applications related to school attendance
Children applying for a place in a special class should be registered at their preferred school, which will be mentioned in the information letter sent home. The actual application for a special class will be made through the child’s kindergarten during the early part of 2026. Families will be informed about the availability of a special class place and possible placement in a school during spring 2026.
A guardian can also enrol their child in a school outside their own school area (secondary school) for a justified reason. The application for school attendance must be made and the decision is taken by the Director of Education on the basis of the opinion of the principal of the secondary school. A precondition for the granting of a secondary school place is that the guardian must be responsible for organising and paying for the pupil’s travel to and from school.
Determination of the pupil’s school place (availabe in Finnish) and application for school attendance rights (available in Finnish)
On the basis of psychological and, where necessary, medical reports, a child may be authorised to start basic education one year later than the legal deadline. In this case, an application must submit with an expert report to the school office. The deferment must also be notified by 2 February either to the school or to the school office, unless the application has been submitted to the school office by that date.
Application for postponement (available in Finnish)
Moving from the municipality / attending school in another municipality
If the child does not start school in Siilinjärvi municipality due to moving away or starts school in a school in another municipality (Steiner school, Christian school, another municipality’s comprehensive school, etc.), the Siilinjärvi school office or the school mentioned in the information letter sent home must be informed.
Getting to know the school
Each school organises an orientation day, usually in April or May. The schools announce the orientation day at the time of enrolment and, as a rule, via the kindergarten near the school.
Health checks by a nurse
As a rule, school inspections take place between June and August. Information about the inspection is sent home during the spring. During the inspection, it is a good idea to discuss, among other things, the certificate of special dietary requirements for school meals.
Instructions for online registration
Electronic registration is done via the Wilma system, which requires a login ID. The guardian creates an account for themselves using a key code. In week 4, a notice/letter is sent by email with the enrolment information, together with key codes for guardians living at the same address as the child, which allow them to create a personal Wilma account. However, only one guardian’s ID will be used to enrol. The Wilma IDs created are valid as long as the child attends Siilinjärvi schools (primary and secondary schools).
