Waste management

Waste management arrangements are based on the Waste Act and municipal waste management regulations. Waste management services such as waste transport, collection and treatment are provided by the municipal waste management company Jätekukko Oy. Jätekukko is a service company owned by the municipalities that provides all services related to the daily waste management of the property. The services include waste transport services, waste management service advice, sorting stations, the Kuopio Waste Centre and ecopoints complementing the Rinki ecopoint network.

The collected municipal waste is delivered to the Riikinneva eco-power plant for recovery as material and energy. The Kuopio waste centre, sorting stations and ecopoints receive waste for recovery and divert waste materials for reuse. The waste centre has a disposal area for waste that cannot be recovered.

Households and businesses can send waste to the waste sorting stations of the Waste Gateway that cannot be placed in a normal waste bin because of its size or characteristics. Household waste that belongs in a normal bin is not accepted at the sorting stations.

The authority responsible for organising waste management is the Savo-Pielinen Waste Board. The tasks of the waste management authority include:

adoption of waste management regulations
handling notifications and applications for derogations under the waste management regulations
approval of the waste levy and processing of applications for waste levies
deciding on the level of service for waste management
monitoring compliance with the obligation to connect to waste management services

The municipality handles the removal of end-of-life vehicles and the landfill site in Säyneenjoki, which receives soil, stumps and garden waste.
