Composting

All appendices are in Finnish.

According to the waste management regulations, properties with at least 5 residential apartments must have a separate bio-waste collection facility. For other properties, the preferred method of treatment for bio-waste is composting on the property.

Compost must be located, constructed and managed in such a way that it does not cause animal or odour nuisance, litter, water pollution or other harm to health or the environment. Composting of food waste must be notified to Jätekukko Oy.

Composting can also be reported directly to the Self-Composting Service (Fill in a composting report).

Food and non-food waste must be composted in a rodent-proof composter with a lid and a bottom or bottom grid. The composter shall be thermally insulated in winter.

The composter must not be placed within 15 metres of a well or water area, or within 5 metres of a property line without the consent of a neighbour. However, the composter may be placed in the waste disposal area indicated on the approved building permit plans without the neighbour’s consent.

Garden waste can be composted in a composting frame. Garden waste that is not composted on the plot should be delivered to the garden waste reception area at the Säyneenjoki landfill . There is no charge for garden waste. The dumping of garden waste in urban parks and nearby forests is prohibited.
