Sand and oil separators

All appendices are in Finnish.

A sand trap in the drainage system prevents sand and an oil trap prevents oils and fuels from entering the sewerage system or the property’s own waste water treatment system. Separators shall be selected and sized according to the provisions of Part D1 of the Building Regulations (2007).

The sediment in the sand separator must be removed when the sediment chamber is more than half full. The oil separator must be emptied well before the oil chamber and/or sediment trap is full. According to the waste management regulations, oil and sand separators must be emptied at least once a year. After emptying, the separators are filled with water before being put into service. The alarm sensor is cleaned when the separator is emptied.

The condition and filling of the separators and the functioning of the alarms must be regularly monitored. Records shall be kept of the monitoring and emptying of the separators, indicating the date of emptying, the quantity of waste, the driver and the destination.
Waste from the separators is hazardous waste, the professional collection and transport of which requires a decision by the North Savo ELY Centre on acceptance in the waste management register or an environmental permit. Waste separator waste must be accompanied by a transfer document.
