Guidance on combating invasive species

All appendices are in Finnish.

Alien species are species that have spread from their natural range to a new area with humans, either accidentally or deliberately. Invasive alien species cause damage to nature, health and the economy, and their impact will increase as the climate warms.

Invasive species that cause clear harm are called invasive alien species. Invasive alien species include giant balsam and giant ragweed, which, when they spread into forests, meadows and wetlands, displace native plant species. Other invasive alien species in Siilinjärvi include comfrey, gourd rose and Japanese knotweed.

To stop harmful invasive species, we need everyone’s contribution

It is the landowner’s responsibility to eradicate invasive species, and everyone should ensure that their own yard does not spread invasive species to neighbouring streams and forests. Invasive species in public areas should be reported to the Municipal Feedback Service.

Guidelines for identifying and controlling invasive species can be found on the vieraslajit.fi website. Weeding residues should be disposed of in such a way that no transmissible plant parts (such as seeds or root fragments) are released into the environment. In Siilinjärvi, invasive species are accepted at the Säyneenjoki landfill in the area reserved for invasive species waste. The Jätekukko sorting station also accepts non-native waste and charges a small load fee. The staff at the sorting station must be informed of the presence of alien waste because of the special treatment it requires. Small quantities of non-hazardous waste can also be placed in the household combustible mixed waste in plastic bags. Remember that the eradication of alien species requires control over several growing seasons.

Invasive species campaign

Associations can organise invasive species events on land owned by the municipality by contacting
Marjo Rissanen tel. 044 740 1515. For larger areas, a small grant is available. In addition, the municipality will provide plastic sacks for the area free of charge, as well as the disposal of filled sacks. Invasive species work is easy and meaningful work for biodiversity!
