Noise

In Siilinjärvi, the most significant sources of outdoor noise are road traffic, rail traffic and civil and military aviation. The propagation and noise areas of road and rail traffic and aircraft noise have been investigated in separate projects and in land use planning and road projects.

Activities that generate significant noise in the environment often require an environmental permit. For example, rock quarrying, shooting ranges and industry are activities where noise is regulated by environmental permits.

The municipality is responsible for monitoring, controlling and promoting noise abatement in the municipality. When planning new housing developments, the layout of buildings and courtyards and the construction of noise barriers ensure acceptable indoor noise levels and sheltered living areas in courtyards. The Siilinjärvi Environmental Health Service is responsible for monitoring indoor noise levels.

Temporary noise sources include construction sites and public events. A notification of temporary noise or vibration must be submitted to the municipality’s environmental protection department in 30 days before the start of the activity. The decision on the notification may, for example, limit the hours of operation and lay down rules to limit the nuisance to the surrounding area.
