Outdoor areas / trails and outdoor recreation areas
The abundant water bodies, the varied terrain in the surrounding area and the unique ridge area starting in the immediate vicinity of the centre of Siilinjärvi offer a variety of outdoor sports opportunities.
Local/regional projects have sought to develop outdoor and recreational sports and this work will continue in the coming years. During 2021 – 2022, a fitness staircase and an outdoor fitness area have been completed in the Patakukkula – Tarinaharju outdoor recreation area in the Kuilun monttu (Maaningantie 34).
Signs and markings on the outdoor trails have been improved. In the same context, an accessible outdoor trail has been created near Laturast (Laturast address: Huvikummuntie 45), with an accessible fireplace along the trail.
Another new fireplace was built along the nature trail on the Tarinaharju side. During the winter season, snowshoe trails run alongside the LatuRast.

Nature trails
The starting point of the Dam Hill – Tarinaharju nature trail is located at the junction of the motorway and the 75 motorway. The trail is 4.1 km long and there are checkpoints / information points along the way. The area is part of the protected area of the National Grassland Conservation Programme.
The Kasurilanmäki nature trail is an outdoor trail created by the village council and the school.
In Vuorela Paasisalo, there is a nature trail created by environmental nursing students from the Savo Vocational College, with two different lengths: 2.2 km and 3.6 km. The trails will be in test use in summer 2022 and will be completed in autumn 2022.

In Toivala, the forestry and woodworking training centre on the old 5 road has trails of various lengths.

The fitness ladder of the abyss
The fitness ladders are located near the Kuilu beach volleyball courts. The stairs are also easily accessible via a light traffic underpass from the centre of Siilinjärvi. The stairs have three different levels of steepness. From the top of the stairs you can access the outdoor trails of Patakukkula.

Outdoor gym in the Gap
In the outdoor fitness area next to the beachvolley courts at the Kuilun jump gym os, Maaningantie 34, there are resistance outdoor fitness equipment + streetworkout type scaffolding. Exercise stairs near the outdoor fitness area.
Simppa beach fitness shelter
In the fitness centre in the courtyard of the beach and VuoKu house, a few pieces of resistance outdoor fitness equipment + ab/back/dip combination. The outdoor gym will be completed in August 2023.
Streetworkout area at the Ahmo sports field
Free streetworkout area at the Ahmo sports field (Myllykuja 8). The artificial turf area allows for a variety of workouts using your own body weight.

In the playground area next to Ahmo’s artificial turf, there is outdoor exercise equipment where you can use your own body weight as resistance. The area is free to use.
Fireplaces
Boulder-free unobstructed fireplace
The Kalettoma accessible fireplace is located near the Kalettoma beach along an accessible outdoor trail. During the winter season, a snowmobile trail runs alongside the fire. The trail to the fire site is from the LatuRast hut (hut address Huvikummuntie 45). The location is marked on the Patakukkula outdoor trail map (map at the top of the page).
The fireplace of the Temple of Love on Tarinaharju hill
The fire site is located along a nature trail on the Tarinaherju hill. The site is most easily accessible via the Tarinanmäki tennis courts, with a P-zone next to the tennis court. From the upper platform of the fitness stairs of the pit to the fireplace is about 500 metres. The location is marked on the map of the outdoor trail of the Dam Hill.
Kasurilan – The hermits’ hut in the back
The hut is located in Kasurilamäki. From Räimänantie turn to Räsälänmäentie and drive 1.6 km. The hut is on the left side of the road. The hut is always open, and the wilderness people who run it welcome all hikers who want to keep it clean and collect rubbish. There is game camera surveillance in the area.
Kasurilanmäki hut
The Kasurila Village Association maintains the lodge at the top of Kasurila Hill, at the end of Kukkurintie. You can either arrive by car via Kukkurintie, or hike up to the bottom of the ski slope in summer, or along the trail from the school.
Paasisalo hut
The Paasisalo hut can be found in the Paasisalo outdoor recreation area. The address of the P-place is Paasirannantie 12. The hut is located halfway along the illuminated (3.5 km) fitness track, at about the highest point of the track. Along the route you will find beautiful views towards the Kallavettä and also some old, but usable, outdoor gym equipment. The lodge is maintained by Vuorela Kunto and the municipality of Siilinjärvi.
Pöljän forest house
The hut run by the Pöljä Village Association is located in the immediate vicinity of the Pöljä school at Viitonen 2881. Call the phone numbers on the wall of the hut to get the code to open the door. There are nice forest paths around the cottage and other sports activities in the schoolyard.
Patikkala hut
The Patikkala hut is located on the shore of Pienen Ruokolampi, at the end of the illuminated fitness trail, surrounded by beautiful marshland. You can also swim in the clear water of the pond. The closest parking lot to the lodge is located at Isoharjantie 4, in the Innocum business centre car park. From here it is about 1,5 km along the paths to the lodge. From the Huvikummuntien car park it is about 2 km along the illuminated fitness track and from the Patakukkula park it is about 3.5 km.

Sledging routes
Snowmobile route closed in winter 2025 between Ranta-Toivala – Jälänjärvi between Vt 9 due to road collapse!
About 78 km of the North Savo snowmobile route runs in the municipality of Siilinjärvi:
Ranta-Toivala – Toivala – Jälänjärvi – Juurusvesi – Puutosvesi – Vaivionniemi – Pajulahti Shell (connection to Tahkovuori)
Juurusvesi – Siilinlahti – Tarinaharju – Harjamäki – Kevätönjärvi (connection to Maaninga) – Pöljä
Paddling routes
The sub-regional area has a canoeing route plan prepared by the North Savo Environment Centre. There are dozens of break/landing places along the route.
The waterways in the area, with their uninterrupted connections, provide good routes.
