Flora and fauna
Ridges, groves and lush water bodies allow for a diverse flora and fauna in Siilinjärvi. For example, Patakukkula-Tarinaharju has ridge mallow, sedge grass, rock angelicaand fellshorn beardgrass. There is old forest around the soups. In the grove of Kuivasteenmäki, there are demanding plants, such as larch, blackcurrant, honeysuckle and wormwood.
Many lakes that were once lowered to increase arable land are now valuable bird waters. The most valuable areas of the springless lake have been protected in order to preserve the breeding and migratory value of birds. In addition to the abundant waterfowl, species such as the collared heron and the brown falcon have been recorded in Kevattomä.
The Middle and Upper Maaninga bird lakes are internationally important bird areas(IBA area). The diverse area of Kasurila-Jälä-Jännevirta, which consists of lush bird lakes, meadows, fields and deciduous forests, is one of Finland’s important bird areas(FINIBA area). Some of the backwaters in the Kuopio region are IBAs and others are FINIBAs.
Several forest stands have been found in Siilinjärvi inhabited by the endangered (NT) species of the Siilinjärvi Flying Squirrel, which is protected under the Nature Conservation Act. Destruction and deterioration of breeding and resting places of the flying squirrel is prohibited under the Nature Conservation Act.
