Statistics

The key statistics needed by the municipality are obtained from Statistics Finland, the Population Register Centre, the Union of Finnish Local and Regional Authorities, the North Savo Regional Council and the North Savo ELY Centre.

The municipality also produces various statistical analyses and its own population and employment forecasts.

Population

The municipality’s population at the end of 2024 was 21 269 inhabitants, with a decrease of
-21 inhabitants (-0.1%) compared to the previous year

Siilinjärvi’s population growth has slowed down considerably from the growth of previous decades.The 1980s were a period of strong growth, with an increase of 3 581 inhabitants.
Between 1990 and 1999 the increase was 1040 inhabitants and between 2000 and 2009 1380 inhabitants. Between 2010 and 2019 the population increase was 459 inhabitants. In the current decade, the aim is to keep the population on an upward trend.

Just under half of the municipality’s residents live in the parish, a quarter in the rural area and a good quarter in the Toivala-Vuorela area.

The population of Siilinjärvi is quite young. The average age in 2024 was 43.5 years
(North Savo 46.0 , whole country 44.0).
The proportion of people under 15 was 17.9% (North Savo 13.5%, the whole country 14.6%).

The municipality has a well-educated population, with 79.1% of the population aged 15 and over having completed at least upper secondary education by 2023
(76.5% in North Savo and 75.1% in the whole country).

On average, just over 100 dwellings are completed in Siilinjärvi each year.

Companies

Siilinjärvi has over a thousand companies in different sectors. The majority of these are companies with 1-2 employees. There are nine large employers employing more than 100 people. Two of them are in the public sector.

The largest companies in Siilinjärvi are the Yara factory and mine, Hydroline Oy, E. Hartikainen Oy, Lujabetoni Oy, Savon Voima Oyj and the rapidly growing Sakupe Oy.

Jobs and labour force

Siilinjärvi’s economic structure is service-intensive. The majority of Siilinjärvi’s residents earn their livelihoods from services and industry. The employed labour force is divided into
primary production 4% construction and industry 30% and services 66% .

According to new data updated by Statistics Finland, there have been significant fluctuations in the number of jobs during the interest rate period.

Most of the external commuter traffic is directed to Kuopio, but there are also many commuters to Siilinjärvi from Kuopio and other neighbouring municipalities.

The employment situation in Siilinjärvi has been better than the national average in recent years.

Unemployment statistics maintained by Statistics Finland and the ELY Centres are not exactly the same, as the criteria used to register people as unemployed differ. However, this is not relevant for an individual municipality, as the discrepancy treats everyone more or less equally.
