Events and outdoor sales

Private persons, associations and leisure clubs do not have to report the sale and serving of food to the municipal food control authority. Exceptions are events where food is prepared and the activity cannot be considered as low food safety risk and large public events.

The municipal health protection authority must be informed of large public events. It is recommended that notification be made using the form that opens here. The Finnish National Board of Health and Welfare (Valvira) has issued guidelines on the hygienic organisation and waste management of large public events. The guidelines can be found here.

The operator of a mobile food premises (mobile vehicle or other mobile sales premises, e.g. tent and vending machine) must inform the supervisory authority of each municipality in whose territory food is sold or otherwise handled from the mobile food premises. This information must be provided in writing, e.g. by e-mail. Information may be given by telephone if the operator has already been in the area of the control unit. The information must reach the control authority four working days before the start of the activity. In addition, the operator must have notified the supervisory authority of the municipality in which the activity has started or the municipality in which the maintenance and storage facilities for the equipment are located before the activity starts. The notification can be made using this form.

The Food Authority’s Guideline on the control of mobile food premises applies mutatis mutandis to foreign sales:
